Fledgling Reminder

Remember, subscriptions for Fledgling close on March 15. If you meant to subscribe, or to catch your subscription up to $25 in order to receive a trade paperback of the finished novel, the moment is upon you. Subscription donations may be made from the PayPal button on the Fledgling front page or by direct PayPal payment to fledgling ATkorval.com. If utilizing the second option, please put FLEDGLING DONATION in the subject line.

After March 15 -- that is Saturday -- we will not accept any more subscription donations or pre-orders for Fledgling.

Thank you all for your support of this project, which was more than we had ever dreamed, and we hope that you're enjoying reading Saltation.

All Dragon Tide Pre-orders have been mailed

All the pre-ordered Dragon Tide have been mailed and should have made it to their proper destinations by now. If you pre-ordered and have not yet received your book, please write to catalog9ATkorval.com. If you can provide a PayPal receipt or the date on which your check was mailed, that would be excellent. We think we have the database glitch that caused this problem nailed and fixed, and apologize for the inconvenience it caused everyone.

In general, please allow 21 days from the day you make your order for your books to arrive. This time may be longer during peak holiday and con-going seasons. We will try to put an announcement on the SRM Publisher front page when we know that fulfillment is going to go longer than 21 days. We note that our local postmaster will not even initiate a search for a "late" shipment until it has been undelivered for 30 days.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

March 15 cutoff date for Fledgling subscriptions
Now that Saltation is underway,
Sharon and Steve have taken the decision to cut off subscriptions to the
Fledgling project, now complete in first draft.

Anyone who contributes $25 to the Fledgling project prior to March 15,
2008
will be on the list to receive a trade paper edition of the
complete-and-edited book, should one be produced. AFTER March 15, your
reward for a donation to Fledgling will be the warm, fuzzy feeling
you'll get by knowing that you're playing a personal part in feeding the
authors' cats, and the sincere thanks of the authors themselves. What
you won't get is a trade paper edition of Fledgling, should one be
produced.

For the foreseeable future, Fledgling-the-draft will remain on the web
and available for reading and research for those who are following the
continuing story in Saltation.

Thank you all! for your amazing and gratifying support of these
projects. We thank you, and our characters thank you. Blessings upon
all of your houses!

Saltation underway
As mentioned above, Saltation, detailing the further adventures of Theo
Waitley, is now underway. Chapters One and Two are on the web at
http://www.korval.com/saltation. Chapter Three will go live at noon
Eastern Time on Monday, February 4.

Changes on the SRM and Korval pages

Liaden Universe® Infodump # 66

In which we discuss anniversaries, Theo Waitley, travel plans, book stuff, webstuff, and ... stuff. all related to Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's Liaden Universe® and other Lee and Miller creative endeavors.

20 Years and counting: Happy anniversary to Val Con and Miri!
We'd like to ask you to help us celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Liaden Universe®, as brought to the world through Agent of Change from Del Rey. This 247 page book changed the world for some of us (notably Sharon Lee and Steve Miller!) but also started a long-and-winding path that so far includes a couple million words of Liaden fiction, closets full of fading t-shirts and work shirts, an audio book, a serial podcast, silver pins, some good and some not so good buttons, some great book covers, avatars and islands in Second Life, and readers around the world, reading books and stories in multiple languages.

So far this year we're planning:

BOSKONE hook-up ....
As usual when we're not being guests elsewhere, we'll be at Boskone (that's in Boston) ... this year that dates are February 15 -17 and David Weber is Guest of Honor. We're both set to be on the program, but we're not sure what we'll be doing yet, though there will be a Liaden 20th Anniversary event of some kind. See http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/

We're hoping for a Friends of Liad breakfast, and we expect to debut the new mass-market-sized edition of Liaden Universe(r) Companion Volume 1 as well, with the assistance of Pandemonium Books. The con committee has helped us snag a suite for a party, details TBD. If anyone's interested in helping with/occupying such a party suite, please let us know.

A trip to Denver ...for the WORLDCON NAMED DENVENTION ... here we've also asked for suite information. Anyone want to go? Anyone want to help with a suite? We've got the time blocked out, the trip planned, and we're setting up a visit to a couple of carousels along the way.
Details at http://www.denvention3.org/

A trip to ALBACON in October, Albany, New York, USA .. where long-time Liaden fan, first reader, and general nice lady Anne McCaffrey is GoH, along with her co-author and son, Todd. We're not sure what we'll be doing there besides being there. I note that if you're close to Albany and would like to get involved, the committee has openings for everything from gophers to department heads. Details: http://www.albacon.org/

Dragon Tide
Due to some unfortunate planning on Steve's part (sigh), Dragon Tide was delayed until after Christmas -- next time he'll read the email from the printer that says "Renovations coming in December." Dragon Tide is now literally in house, and the first 225 copies signed. We only have another equal amount to sign and then Steve starts packing and shipping. The first of those pre-ordered chapbooks should be reaching readers by Saturday, January 19. Watch the skies.

Speaking of Renovations...
Our web presence is changing. Not only is the SRM Publisher catalog moving to a new location but we're working on things behind the scenes for the general Liaden website on korval.com. This will be the first attempt at a complete site rebuild since 1995 or 1998(!) so features may come and go for awhile. Both the catalog and the Liaden page side of things may experience interruptions during these rebuilds. Please be patient.

News: Theo Waitley Flies Again -- Saltation
Check here for info: http://www.korval.com/saltation/Theoconnect.html
anytime, but know that starting January 21, around noon Eastern Time, we'll post the first installment of the nearly weekly Theo Waitley novel, Saltation. We're not going to give an exact schedule this time -- because it was a very difficult thing to keep up with.

We will use most of the same arrangements as Fledgling, basically planning one installment a week until the story is done near the end of the year, assuming reader support warrants. We're shooting for a world count of around 111,111 words; we note that various word processors give different word counts for the same body of text.

We're not going to attempt to predict a chapter count this time -- we learn by doing. Saltation will have a pay button that should go live about the time the first installment is posted. We are still accepting donations toward Fledgling; please do not combine Fledgling and Saltation donations: our accountant hates that!

To visit Fledgling, now complete in rough draft, see http://www.korval.com/fledgling/

In Other News
We'll be taking part in another event as part of the online Second Life community -- The SL Literary Festival, Saturday, 2 February 2008 will be going on at Info Island. Check in at InfoIsland or watch our blogs for update.

Dragon Tides News

SRM Publisher is sorry to announce that Dragon Tides: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 13 will be late.

We know this news is disappointing; in fact, we are disappointed ourselves. Producing and distributing the Yule chapbook is one of the highlights of our year, and has been since 1995. The book will still happen -- no question of that. But we've reached the point (based on realities like lead time at the printer, signing and mailing) that we cannot be certain that the books will arrive in time for Christmas. We wanted to get the word out as soon as we could, because we know some folks give our chapbooks as presents.

For those who may be curious as to what happened: Liaden Universe Companion® Volume Two went off-schedule with the necessity to find a new printer, and, as we all know, it only needs one thing to go askew in a tight schedule to send everything else spinning out of control. We thought we could make a recover, but LUC 2 wasn't done with us yet: There were numerous database incompatibilities that resulted in people not getting the books they had ordered, and Steve has been occupied in correcting those errors, which has cut into production time for Dragon Tides.

We want to thank everyone for their patience. We are very sorry about this.

Misfits Available

The December issue of Jim Baen's Universe eMagazine is now on sale. Among the many fine stories included is "Misfits," by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

There should be a link to the eArc from the main Baen webpage --

You do need to register in order to purchase an eArc.

LIADEN UNIVERSE® COMPANION VOLUME TWO

_Liaden Universe Companion® Volume Two_, in both hardcover and trade
paper, has arrived at SRM Publisher Central. Pre-ordered books are being
shipped on a first-in, first out basis. Expect this to take up to
several weeks to shake out (we have a *lot* of orders to send out! You
people are great!) and then we'll be shipping current orders. You can
see the cover and (if you've been holding off until there was news of an
actual book in hand) order at http://www.korval.com/srmcat2.htm

LEE AND MILLER YULE CHAPBOOK

SRM Publisher is proud to announce the title of the 2007 Yule Chapbook.
That would be _Dragon Tide_. The chapbook will contain two original
short stories, "Daughter of Dragons," contiguous with the Agent of
Change sequence. The other story, which is still awaiting a title, is
set within the Crystal timeline. Pre-orders are now open! Simply go to
the Dragon Tide pre-order page (http://www.korval.com/dragontide1.html).
While you're there, you might want to check out the other SRM offerings
. It's never too early to buy Yule presents.

FLEDGLING AND ...SEQUEL

For those who have iron control and have not been over to the Fledgling
site (http://www.korval.com/fledgling/) since Chapter 31 was posted, on
October 8 -- the authors have declared a draft. Yes, we know that there
are things that need to be fixed, threads left dangling, subplots that
are unresolved. We'll deal with those. Second drafts, however, are not
for the squeamish, so we'll be performing the necessary surgery and
repair in private. The current projection is for a trade paperback of
the finished novel to be mailed to qualifying subscribers next autumn.

In the meantime -- we do plan to finish the story out. Watch for an
announcement of a new serialized novel continuing the Life and Times of
Theo Waitley, early next year.

LIADEN UNIVERSE® COMPANION VOLUME ONE REPRINT

_Liaden Universe® Companion Volume One_ in mass-market size is waiting
confirmation of the ISBN. The printer needs to open a slot for this;
we're hoping for a November release. This is not a true mass-market
edition because the book is not "strippable" ... but it should handily
fit on your mass-market size shelves.

ELECTRIC BOOKS

Fictionwise now has nine out of a possible ten Sharon Lee titles
available here: http://www.fictionwise.com/eBooks/SharonLeeeBooks.htm.
Download, read, enjoy! Heck, vote, if the mood is on you.

DUAINFEY

Lee and Miller's fantasy _Duainfey_, is in final draft check-over as we
type, and will be zapped over to the good folks at Baen early next week,
leaving the authors free to begin writing the sequel, _Longeye_.

MORE ELECTRIC BOOKS

Jim Baen's Universe December issue (Vol 2 Num 4 December 2007) will
feature the new Liaden story Misfits by Lee & Miller; you can read half
of the story now if you like: http://baens-universe.com/articles/Misfits
<http://universe.com/articles/Misfits> . If you absolutely must read it
sooner
rather than later you can subscribe on site.

And remember! The complete novels and most of the Liaden Universe® short
stories are available electronically from Webscriptions:
http://www.webscription.net/s-117-sharon-lee.aspx

BOOK SIGNING

Lee and Miller will be signing _Liaden Universe® Companion Number Two_
and other books Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to noon at Children's
Book Cellar, 52 Main Street, Waterville 04901. Come join the authors;
if we get enough visitors maybe we can do a brief walking tour of
downtown Waterville.

BOSTON IN FEBRUARY? HECK YES!

The next scheduled Lee and Miller convention appearance is Boskone 45,
February 15-17 2008 (see http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/ )

Liaden Universe® InfoDump #63

We'd planned to get this InfoDump out on schedule at the end of last month but ... we didn't since certain firm dates became moving targets and then some other stuff happened... and we just didn't. Thanks for your patience! Yep, This is a long one!

COMING ATTRACTIONS:

Liaden Universe® Companion News:

We've experienced some delay in the production of Liaden Universe® Companion Volume Two, which we had planned for an August printing and shipping. While we're doing our best to speed things up we expect this delay to be on the order of 75 days. While going over our list of orders we've also found some mailing address discrepancies as well as a few double orders, which we hope to rectify in advance.

To make sure we're on the same page: As things now stand we expect to begin shipping Liaden Universe® Companion Volume Two in October, with the likelihood that some later orders may not make it out the door until November. We expect to ship in first in/first out order. Expect a confirmation email by the end of the month.

"Mass Market Form Factor" Liaden Universe® Companion Volume One:

With the help of some blog-readers willing to weigh in on the issue of price, we've decided that the reissue of Liaden Universe® Companion Volume One will be in a mass-market sized paperback edition. This will be printed on good white paper of a heavier weight paper than usual paperbacks and will be a "no-strip" edition. Unlike true mass market paperbacks we'll be issuing the book in small print runs and will not accept stripped covers for credit the way large mass market houses do. We expect each printing to be between 600 and 750 copies; the cover price will be $10 and we will allow wholesale orders. We'll have ordering info fairly soon. Watch the skies! Well, checking in on the SRM web catalog might work better.

From Fictionwise, Coming Soon:

Two mystery novels and eight short stories by Sharon Lee are due from electronic publisher Fictionwise, Real Soon Now. Some of these stories had been issued electronically by Embiid but have been out of print in that format since the Embiid shutdown several years ago. The novels are the two Jen Pierce mysteries, both set in Maine: Barnburner and Gunshy (and both originally issued by SRM Publisher, Ltd.), while the shorter works are: "A Matter of Ceremony", "Coffeecat", "Gonna Boogie with Granny Time", "Master of the Winds", "Passionato", "The AfterImage", "The Big Ice", and "The Handsome Prince", which appeared in venues including Amazing Stories, Dragon Magazine, and elsewhere.

Fledgling

Fledgling, soon to be at Chapter 28, continues to gain readers - we hope you're reading the (almost) weekly installments and letting your friends know about it, too. In case reading time is an issue for you, you can also listen to the podcasts put online by Sam Chupp and Fireheart Foundry - if you're in Second Life these are updated regularly and can be found at most SRM Publisher in world locations, if you're not in Second Life you can subscribe to the RSS feed.

"Misfits" Accepted and Scheduled and...

Liaden Universe® novella "Misfits" (aka The Story of the Weatherman and What Became of Him) has been accepted by Jim Baen's Universe and scheduled for publication in the December issue. The first half of the story is available here. There is no charge to read the excerpt; you do not have to register. You do, however, have to wait until December to get the rest of the story.

Speaking of Baen

Baen books will be publishing two fantasy novels by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller; the first, Duianfey is tentatively scheduled for September of 2008. The second, Longeye, still lacks a firm schedule, but does now have a title.

A Little Late but Still in Force:

A few weeks ago we started a five week long "Take Five" sale ... but since we forgot to tell most of you, things have been a bit slow. There's still a couple weeks to go: please visit the Take Five page. Some bargains just in time for the holidays... We know the "get your number" approach is a little cumbersome, but we don't want to run out of things the way we did with the ACE paperbacks awhile back. Thanks for your patience!

In Other News:
Over in Second Life SRM Publisher has added a new store, this one on Publishing Island. If you're already a member of Second life, the following SLURL ought to get you there: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Publishing%20Island/35/135/37/ ... and the island is full of goodies for reader like you.

We expect to be using the new area for some events shortly - we may even try out the new voice feature to give a reading. Have an idea for an event you'd like to see? Drop Elan Neruda an IM in Second Life if you get there. Thinking of visiting the 3D world for the first time? Mention Elan Neruda (alias Steve Miller) or Kit Jimenez (alias Sharon Lee) when they ask who referred you.

Montreal in October

Steve is set to attend CON*CEPT, the Montreal science fiction convention, October 12-14. While we don't expect a Liaden Lounge, Steve will try for a Friends of Liad breakfast if there's any interest. Watch Steve's blog (see below) for additional details.

Boston in February

The next scheduled joint convention Lee & Miller appearance is still Boskone 45, February 15-17 2008.

If all goes well and the creek don't rise, Baen Webscriptions will be publishing the Liaden Universe®, an electronic bundle of every single SRM Publisher Adventures in the Liaden Universe® chapbook ever published, from Two Tales of Korval straight through to Allies on July 15 -- that's next Sunday! Check the Webscriptions page for more information.

SRM Publisher Sellouts
Liaden Universe® Companion Volume One is now Officially Sold Out. Plans are in the works to do a mass market edition. Watch this space for more news on that project.

The Ace editions of the Liaden Universe® books that have been on sale through the SRM Genre Shop have also sold out.

"Misfits" Accepted and Scheduled and...
Liaden Universe® novella "Misfits" (aka The Story of the Weatherman and What Became of Him) has been turned in to Jim Baen's Universe and accepted by Eric "Lightnin'" Flint for publication in the December issue.

Not only that, but the first half of the story is available here. There is no charge to read this excerpt; you do not have to register. You do, however, have to wait until December to get the rest of the story. Fair warning.

Liaden Universe® Companion Volume Two
Pre-orders are still being accepted for LUC #2, scheduled for August publication by SRM Publisher. This volume is 100 percent funded by subscription, so those who pre-order are a vital -- and necessary! -- part of the project. Thanks to everyone who is helping to make this possible!

Meisha Merlin Books in Stock
As reported in our last issue, Meisha Merlin has gone out of business. Lee and Miller collected some of their earned royalties in the form of books, which are being sold through the SRM website. If you're looking for Lee and Miller books, please consider shopping here first.

Author Disappearances
Sadly, neither Sharon nor Steve will be able to attend NASFiC this year. Deadlines, budget lines, and inconveniently scheduled medical procedures conspired to make the trip impossible. We're very sorry about this; we'd been looking forward to seeing everyone, and, frankly, conventions are 'way more fun than going to the hospital.

At the moment, the next convention Lee and Miller are certain to attend is Boskone, in February 2008, and we do intend to make next year's WorldCon, in Denver.

Web of the Trident
We very much regret to report that Web of the Trident, scheduled for hardcover release by Meisha Merlin on March 15, has been indefinitely delayed. This means that we don't know when, or if, it will be released. Yes, we are aware that Amazon.com is reporting its imminent availability, and that bn.com is accepting pre-orders for what it states is a March 28 release. They are, alas, working with outdated information. If this situation changes, you'll hear it here.

Baen Webscriptions
The second Korval bundle, Phase Change, (consisting of the novels Scout's Progress, I Dare, Crystal Soldier, Crystal Dragon, Balance of Trade, and a new introduction by the authors) is now available from Baen Webscriptions

We like to hear from our readers, but please don't write to ask if-or-when the short stories and/or other novels will be available from Baen. As far as we know, Toni Weisskopf and our agent are still talking about the notion of offering those works as Webscriptions. When we know more than that, we'll definitely let y'all know.

Fledgling
The response to Fledgling continues to amaze us. Chapter 8 will be posted on Monday, March 19 and released as a simultaneous podcast. Check out the Fledgling page for more information, or subscribe to the podcast here

We are extremely grateful to Sam Chupp of Fireheart Foundry for taking on the work of reading and producing the podcast edition.

Crystal Soldier Mass Market
The Ace edition of Crystal Soldier is now available at a bookstore near you!

Crystal Dragon Trade Edition
The Meisha Merlin trade paper edition of Crystal Dragon is in stores now; you should find it very near the Meisha Merlin mass market edition of The Tomorrow Log we told you about last time.

Liaden Universe® Companion, Volume One Near Sellout
A book dealer tells us that he is returning several unopened cases of Liaden Universe® Companion, Volume One to SRM Publisher in the near future because of a change in his convention schedules. He's sending them media mail, so it may take us awhile to get them. At the moment we have less than 1 case in hand - around 30 copies. We have meetings with several printers in the near future to discuss going to a mass-market size reprint, but there's no firm decision on that. In any case, the first edition of LUC#1 is just about gone. Thanks for all the support!

Liaden Universe® Companion, Volume Two
Advance subscriptions are now being taking for Liaden Universe® Companion, Volume Two, scheduled for an August release from SRM Publisher, Ltd. As of this writing, advance subscriptions have funded about half of the amount needed to go to press.

This project will collect Changeling, Phoenix, Heirloom, Naratha's Shadow, Veil of the Dancer, Quiet Knives, This House, Lord of the Dance, Sweet Waters... in one full-size hardcover/trade paper volume.

However, the success of the project depends on you. Pre-subscribers will not only get their books signed, but they will have the warm, fuzzy feeling of knowing that they have contributed to the publication of this volume, and that it would not have happened without them.

Go here for more information.

Even More Podcast and Second Life News
"Electric Words," a talk given by Steve Miller at the Second Life Library on Info Island on March 11 is now online for your listening pleasure.

We need to thank Second Life Residents Anhayla Lycia, Shawna Montgomery, Pam Ribble, Alexander Basiat.... and a host of others who helped with the "Electric Words" presentation at Info Island. Despite some in-world technical difficulties that crew got us online and at work -- except that Sharon's avatar Kit ended up voiceless throughout. In the tradition of "the show must go on" the joint talk turned into a monologue for Steve. Do check out the podcast!

Independent Bookstore Needs Your Help!

In the beginning of 2006, Pandemonium Books moved from its (cramped-but-cool) location in Harvard Square (Boston) to Brand!New!Spacious! Quarters in Central Square, Cambridge. The move, as moves often do, took longer and was more expensive than forecast, and now, nine months after the new store's Grand Opening, Pandemonium is in trouble, with its debt load and back taxes placing it in double jeopardy.

In order to try to reduce its debt -- and pay off those back taxes! -- Pandemonium is offering supporters the chance to buy a t-shirt of month. If you don't wear t-shirts, or just don't want one, the store is also gratefully accepting donations via PayPal. Full details are here

Pandemonium Books and Games is one of a dwindling breed of independent SF bookstores. We'd hate to see them close, and not just because of their endangered species" credentials. OK, let's face it, we'd hate to see them close for some purely selfish reasons. Over the years we've been made very welcome there by Tyler, Phil, Julia, Spike, Ruth and other staff members as well as by an active community of readers. Pandemonium's crew helped us through some slim times in the past by taking us out to dinner after a signing ... and they've also taken us out to dinner, breakfast and lunch -- and supplied is with rides in and around Boston for a number of signings, just because they could. They went out of their way to carry our books and chapbooks at a time when Lee & Miller were not the household names we are today.... This is not just another bookstore, folks -- they value writers and they love books. So, here's your chance to help Pandemonium break out! Please consider lending them a little support.

Thanks!
